Msheireb Arts Centre

Monday blog post #23

Hello!

How you've been? I'm a bit tired and need some time off.

I was at the printmaking workshop last week organized by Msheireb Arts Centre with an UK based artist and printmaker Jacqueline Yuen Ling Chiu

I can only say it was an amazing experience and I learned a lot. I had some experience in printmaking but only with textile surfaces such as screen printing and transfer printing during my university time.

The biggest surprise for me was the building, as in Doha everything is either completely new and modern or totally destroyed and this place is something different.
It's a 1950s school building which was the first girls’ school in Qatar, named ‘Al Wassat’, and was built by the government for Amna Mahmood Al Jaidah who had formerly been teaching classes in her own home. The building has been renovated to its former state by Msheireb Properties, with some classrooms left intact in the state in which they were found. Additions include a gallery space, storage facilities for the found objects, workshop rooms, and artists’ studios.

At the workshop we learned different techniques for printmaking such as:
- drypoint plastic plate
- drypoint aluminium plate
- Japanese vinyl relief plate
- photopolymer plate
- collograph plate

with the best quality materials.

Here are some of my works:

People at the workshop were all artists and it was really interesting to meet them, to see how they work, their ideas... We even ended up going out all together at the Four Seasons Hotel where they organize beach party every Thursday. Brilliant experience! I can't wait for them to organize another workshop!

Tasmeem 2013

Monday blog post #20

Hi, hello, welcome!

Last week was so intense as I participated in a 5 days workshop at art+design conference here in Doha called Tasmeem.

Tasmeem Doha is the international art and design conference held biennially at VCUQatar.
Over the past eight years, Tasmeem has gathered scholars and practitioners of art and design to discuss critical issues and engage with students and local communities.

Workshop I chose to be a part was FELT CASE STUDY #1 led by amazing artist Hope Ginsburg Carol Derby and Deidre Hoguet from Designtex, Corby Elford postgraduate student at VCU-Q and Richard Lombard material curator at VCU-Q.

We had a great time + we learned new skills by making felt from sheep hair + making a product/installation for our exhibition which took a place on the last day of our workshop.

After successful exhibition we had Friday off and continued with the conference on Saturday and Sunday. We could see lots of really interesting presentations, film festival, Tasmeem exploration platform, exhibitions, laboratories, fashion show. We could make print on a t-shirt and buy products from VCUQs students.

I loved the presentation by Melanie McClintock who is working on a project in Indonesia: Indoartmiks

I bought fabulous brooch and batik fabric made by students and community in Indonesia.

Last day of conference was closed with the famous architect Rem Koolhaas who is working on several amazing projects here in Doha.

Now it's time to start working on your custom orders :)))

Art workshop with International Artists Doha

I'm starting to love painting together with other artists. They are so inspiring!  Each artist has it's own technique and materials and brushes and colors they use and after I came from the workshop which was from 7-10pm  I was still excited and wanted to continue painting but it was already late. So I couldn't wait to get up in the morning and continue with my painting.

Friends Workshop Exhibition of the Qatar Fine Arts Society

From 23rd May to 20th June Qatar Fine Arts Society organized a group art exhibition with 63 local and resident artists. After the opening, from 24th to 26th May we had a chance to participate in a workshop all together and we all made one or two pieces of art which we gave as a gift to the Society and as their gift to us they organized an exhibition of those work. The opening night was yesterday, on 11th September and it was really nice. Many people came, there was a lovely atmosphere with a live music and tasty food :)
Many thanks to Mr Mohammed Al Atiq for organizing such a lovely event.
